Barcelona have announced that they are prepared to open legal proceedings against publications that claimed club president Josep Maria Bartomeu oversaw the signing of midfielder Paulinho to benefit his company.
Paulinho agreed to join Barcelona from Guangzhou Evergrande on Monday, with the deal set to be formalised on Thursday.
Bartomeu is also the chief executive officer of the Adelete Group, which certain publications suggested may have an interest in Paulinho’s transfer from the Chinese Super League.
A statement on the club’s official website read: “FC Barcelona has made several requests for rectification to the authors of the information, as well as the media that published it, in which Josep Maria Bartomeu was accused of having signed the player Paulinho Bezerra in the framework of an operation to favour the interests of his company.
“This morning, FC Barcelona has made several requests for rectification to the authors of the information, as well as the media that published it, which accused the club’s president, Josep Maria Bartomeu, of having signed player Paulinho Bezerra in the frame of an operation to favour the interests of his company.
“Given the falsity of this news, and that implies the imputation of a crime, in case this rectification does not occur, both the Club and the president, in particular, will initiate the corresponding criminal proceedings. These actions will also involve the express request of the damages arising from the damages that this falsehood could have caused in the image of the Entity.
“FC Barcelona will not tolerate false information which could harm the club, and appeals to the responsibility of professionals and media who have made use without having proven.”
Having left Tottenham Hotspur in 2015, Paulinho proceeded to produce some excellent performances for Guangzhou Evergrande, which led to him earning a recall to the Brazil squad.
It has been a rather quiet transfer window for Barcelona so far in terms of incomings. As well as the Paulinho signing, right-back Nelson Semedo has joined from Benfica, while Barcelona exercised their buyback clause to re-sign winger Gerard Deulofeu from Everton and centre-back Marlon Santos has had his loan move from Fluminense made permanent but more acquisitions are needed, especially following Neymar’s high-profile departure to Paris Saint-Germain.
